Your Resume

Your resume is your marketing document.  Its appearance is important because you want
your resume to be selected from amongst the many.  While you want it to stand out, it
should be conservative and tasteful.

Your professional positions should be in reverse chronological order.  Use an active first-
person tense with action verbs (not “responsible for” but rather “directed” “supervised”
and the like).

Generally your most recent positions should have more sentences than earlier ones, which
can be briefly summarized.  Bullet-points are often more appropriate than complete
sentences, but each person’s experience is different, so you must see which form works
best for you.  Use appropriate industry terms for law firms, accounting firms and
corporations.  You may want to adapt your resume for different job openings (give different
weight to your present and past duties).  You may also want to have one resume for
accounting firms and a different one for corporations, for example, that stress different
functions that you performed in your previous jobs.

Attractive fonts include Times Roman or Bookman or Verdana.  Print size should be 11 or
12 preferably; never use less than 10.  Avoid excessive use of bold, italics or underlining.
It should not be overly-crowded, and should have ample “white space” to make it
attractive.  Use good-quality stationary and a good printer (no smudges, partial letters,
etc).  Plan on bringing 10 resumes to each interview so that you have ample copies.

Of course, your resume should be proof read (not just spell-checked) before you send it to
us. We will assist in making corrections if needed. We have found errors such as "Masters
in Fiancé" (!?!) that a spell-checker may not find.   For a professional position, a single
typo will often put your resume at the bottom of the list.

Be prepared to answer specific questions about what you put in your resume. Read it right
before your interview to refresh your memory about what you put in it and why.
